Birth injuries are serious matters that require attention

Medical malpractice encompasses a host of situations. One of these is birth injuries. Women who go into the hospital or a birth center expect to deliver healthy babies without having any issues. Unfortunately, there are times when things go wrong. These can put a mother and her baby in danger.

It's estimated that five out of every 1,000 babies will have a birth injury. These are the result of a medical professional who doesn't handle something during the birth properly. While you may automatically think first of your doctor's liability, the real fault could lie with any member of your labor and delivery team.

When a woman is in labor, monitoring her vital signs and the baby's must be a priority. Sometimes, the vitals can point to serious issues. For example, there might be an issue with the baby if the heartrate dips when the woman is having contractions. If the medical team fails to act on this, there is a chance that the baby may suffer grave harm or even die.

Other issues like shoulder dystocia, failure for the labor to progress and problems with the umbilical cord can also lead to problems. All of these must be considered throughout the labor and delivery of the baby so that both patients can remain as safe as possible.

There are several other things that can go wrong when the medical team isn't taking care of the woman and her baby. When harm does occur due to a medical professional's negligence, victims often must seek compensation for the damages that they suffer through legal means.
