Misdiagnosis issues can often lead to malpractice claims. With some conditions, such as a heart attack, a misdiagnosis is a very significant error. It could lead to severe health complications, or the patient could even pass away without getting appropriate treatment.
For instance, if someone goes to the emergency room because they think they may be having a heart attack, but the doctor believes they are just suffering from fatigue and a panic attack, the doctor could send them home to rest. But if they do that without treatment for the actual heart attack, they could then pass away at home. Family members may claim that their loved one could have been saved if they simply would have received the appropriate treatment when they got to the emergency room.
Who is at the greatest risk?
Medical malpractice can happen to anyone, and it often revolves around negligent mistakes or situations where a doctor does not offer the expected standard of care.
But studies do show that, with heart attack issues, a misdiagnosis is more likely for a female patient. Part of the issue is that women and men often have different heart attack symptoms.
A woman who is having a heart attack may talk about fatigue, indigestion, nausea and back or neck pain, for example. Men are more likely to have shortness of breath and crushing chest pain. If the doctor is only looking for male symptoms, it could lead to a misdiagnosis for a female patient.
